What is kitting in a warehouse?

Kitting is assembling several separate items into one unit that is stocked or shipped under its own SKU.

Two ways to kit

Some kits are built only when an order arrives. Others are built ahead of demand and stored like any other product.

Building to order keeps components flexible. Building to stock makes picking faster when the same kit sells every day.

Worked example

In this example, a starter kit contains 1 router, 1 cable and 1 printed guide. An order for 20 kits arrives.

The system reserves 20 of each component, sends pick tasks to bring them to the assembly zone, and records 20 kit units once a worker builds them. The components leave the ledger as the kits enter it.

How Waresify handles it

Kitting is a module on the Professional and Enterprise plans. Each kit is assemble to order, built when a sales order arrives, or build to stock, built by a kit build order and put away.

Kits can also be broken back into components. Waresify does not support nested kits or component substitution.

Questions

Is kitting the same as manufacturing?

No. Kitting combines finished items without changing them. Manufacturing turns materials into a new product.

Can a kit contain another kit?

Not in Waresify. Components must be ordinary items.
