What is a storage location?

A storage location is one addressable slot in a warehouse where stock sits, identified by a code that workers read and scan.

What makes a location

A location is the smallest place the WMS tracks stock in. It might be a pallet position in a rack, a shelf bin, a marked floor area or a bulk lane.

Each location has a code printed on a label. Workers scan that label to prove they are at the right place.

Worked example

In this example, the code 03-B-02-1 means aisle 03, rack B, level 02, position 1. A putaway task tells the driver to go there.

The driver scans the label and the system checks it matches the task. Scanning 03-B-02-2 by mistake is refused before any stock is recorded in the wrong slot.

How Waresify handles it

Waresify locations are typed pallet, bin, bulk, floor or area. Each has an aisle, rack, level and position, and can carry a custom code that replaces the generated one.

You create locations during setup by adding them one at a time, uploading a CSV, generating a range, or drawing racks in the layout builder. Tenant settings decide whether a location may hold mixed LPs, mixed items or mixed lots.

Questions

What naming scheme should I use for locations?

One that workers can read on the move. Aisle, rack, level and position, in a fixed order with the same number of digits, is the most common.

Can one location hold several items?

In Waresify that is a setting. You can allow or refuse mixed items, mixed LPs and mixed lots per company.
