What is a dock door?

A dock door is a loading bay door where trucks back up to load or unload goods, usually scheduled so arrivals do not queue.

What dock doors control

A dock door is where the warehouse meets the truck. The number of doors and how long each truck spends at one set how much the site can receive and ship in a day.

Some doors are kept for inbound, some for outbound, and some take either. A door can also be out of use for repairs.

Worked example

In this example, a site has 3 doors and books inbound trucks in 60-minute slots between 06:00 and 14:00. That is 24 slots a day.

Door 2 is blocked for a leveller repair on Tuesday, so only 16 slots can be booked that day, and carriers see the reduced schedule when they book.

How Waresify handles it

Dock doors are part of the yard management module, on the Professional and Enterprise plans. Each door is typed inbound, outbound or flexible.

A door has a status of available, scheduled, occupied, blocked or maintenance. The module adds appointment slots and lets carriers book their own.

Questions

How long should a dock slot be?

Long enough for a typical truck plus a margin. Time a few unloads first. A full trailer of loose cartons takes much longer than one of pallets.

Do I need yard management to use dock doors?

No. Every warehouse has doors. Yard management adds booking, door assignment and tracking of trucks waiting in the yard.
