What is yard management?

Yard management is tracking trucks and trailers from gate arrival through the yard to a dock door and departure, including the appointments that schedule them.

What happens outside the building

Trucks that arrive unannounced queue at the gate, block the yard and leave doors idle at other times. Yard management books arrivals into slots and tracks each trailer until it leaves.

Many smaller sites run this on a whiteboard or a shared spreadsheet.

Worked example

In this example, a carrier books a 10:00 slot online. The truck arrives at 09:40, and the supervisor checks it in and assigns yard position 4.

At 10:00 door 2 frees up, the trailer moves to the door and unloading starts. The trailer departs at 10:50 and the door shows available again.

How Waresify handles it

Yard management is a module on the Professional and Enterprise plans. It covers dock door status, appointment booking with time slots, a self-booking portal for carriers, and tracking of each trailer from gate to yard to door to departure.

Supervisors run gate check-in from a browser, so no separate gate role is needed.

Questions

Do carriers need an account to book a slot?

Waresify supports both token links and authenticated carrier accounts.

Is yard management worth it with only two doors?

It depends on traffic. If trucks often wait or arrive at the same time, booked slots help even at small sites.
